Our core values as an organization

Our Core Values: Building a More Literate North Idaho, One Life at a Time

At The Literacy Project of North Idaho, we don’t just teach reading—we empower futures. Our work is guided by deep-rooted values that shape every program, partnership, and interaction.

1. Every Adult Deserves Opportunity

36 million U.S. adults read at or below a third-grade level. That’s not just a statistic—it’s 36 million missed opportunities for stable jobs, engaged parenting, and full participation in society.

Our Commitment:

  • Free, accessible tutoring for all adults

  • Personalized learning plans

  • Judgment-free support

"When I finally read a book to my son, I felt like a real parent for the first time." — James, Literacy Project learner

2. Literacy Is More Than Reading—It’s Freedom

True literacy means:
📖 Reading a prescription
💻 Applying for jobs online
📝 Helping kids with homework
🗣️ Advocating for yourself

We teach practical, life-changing skills—because literacy should work for real life.

3. Transformation Starts with Trust

Learning as an adult takes courage. We create spaces where:
🔹 Shame is replaced with encouragement
🔹 Struggles are met with patience
🔹 Every small victory is celebrated

Our tutors don’t just teach—they walk alongside learners.

4. Strong Communities Start with Strong Families

When one parent learns to read:
👨‍👧‍👦 Children’s school performance improves by 50%
💼 Household income rises by 30% on average
🏡 Entire neighborhoods grow stronger

We focus on generational impact—because literacy breaks cycles.

5. Real Change Requires All of Us

This work isn’t possible without:
🤝 Volunteers who give 1-2 hours weekly
💛 Donors who fund free programs
📚 Partners like schools and employers

Together, we’re rewriting North Idaho’s future.
