Literacy in America: By the Numbers
While 79% of U.S. adults can complete tasks requiring comparison, paraphrasing, or basic inferences (PIAAC Level 2+), 21% struggle with these fundamental skills. This means:
• 43 million American adults have low literacy skills
• 26.5 million read at the most basic level (Level 1)
• 8.4 million function below Level 1
• 8.2 million couldn't participate due to language/cognitive barriers
These gaps limit opportunities in employment, healthcare, and daily life. At The Literacy Project NI, we're working to change these statistics through our programs.
